This Friday marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day, and here at Cannock Shopping Centre we’ve come up with some great ideas on how you can celebrate the day at home! So grab your bunting, pop on some 1940’s music and read on!
The Works have got a great range of decorations for VE Day, including hanging lanterns, Union Jack cups and plates and paper streamers! Prefer to get creative and make your own? They also have a selection of craft supplies for you to create everything from bunting to flags for you to decorate your windows and gardens.
Try your hand at some 1940’s recipes with a wartime carrot cake, lazy daisy cake or fruit scones! Head to the Argos website to check out their selection of bakeware to help you create some delicious baked goods. If the sun is shining, we recommend grabbing a picnic blanket, making some homemade lemonade and celebrating in the garden!
A 1940’s celebration wouldn’t be complete without some great music from the era. Tune into Retro Radio to catch all the classics from Bing Crosby to Billie Holiday and Glenn Miller! If you can’t resist having a dance, there are plenty of swing dancing tutorials for you to try out and learn the basic steps on YouTube!
BBC One will also be showing some dedicated programmes throughout the day to mark the occasion:
11am | The Nation Remembers : BBC One will lead to two minute silence to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
2.45pm | The Announcement of Victory : Winston Churchill’s speech will be broadcast.
8pm | The People’s Celebration : The BBC and the Royal British Legion honour and celebrate the Second World War generation with an evening of memories and music and ask the nation to unite for a rendition of ‘We’ll Meet Again’ by Vera Lynn.
9pm | The Queen’s Speech.
We are wishing you a lovely Bank Holiday weekend with your loved ones and take care.
